COVID-19
In December 2019, an outbreak of a new disease was reported in Wuhan, China. It was established to be caused by novel coronavirus also known as Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus-2 (SARS-CoV-2). The novel coronavirus is a new strain of coronavirus that has not been previously known in humans. The disease caused by this novel corona virus was officially given the name coronavirus disease 2019, abbreviated as COVID-19.
Signs & symptoms
Most patients have a fever and respiratory symptoms such as:
- Cough and sneezing
- Sore throat
- shortness of breath
Transmission
- According to current evidence, COVID-19 virus is transmitted between people through respiratory droplets and contact routes. This can be either direct or indirect.
- Direct: Droplet transmission occurs when a person is in in close contact (within 1 m) with someone who has respiratory symptoms (e.g. coughing or sneezing)
- Indirect: Droplet transmission may also occur through fomites in the immediate environment around the infected person. By indirect contact with surfaces in the immediate environment or with objects used on the infected person
Measures to prevent the spread of novel coronavirus COVID-19
- Wash your hands with soap regularly
- No handshaking
- Practice respiratory hygiene (covering your mouth and nose with your bent elbow or tissue when you cough or sneeze.)
- Avoid touching eyes, nose and mouth
- Limit social contacts and keep sufficient distance (1.5m) from each other
- Stay at home with symptoms of the common cold or flu
